2007 Scholarship Award Winners
The
Will-South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is pleased to
announce the 2007 Conservation Education Scholarship recipients. They are
Jacob Nordmann, graduate of Wilmington High School, Mary Schneider, graduate of
Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences and Samantha Jaworski, graduate of
Marian Catholic High School. Each recipient will
receive a $1000 scholarship toward their college tuition.

Jacob will attend Joliet Junior College in the fall of
2007. Jacob's plans include a career with the Illinois Department of
Natural Resources (IDNR). Mr. Nordmann's goal, to become an IDNR
officer, will enable him to "help preserve hunting rights and enforce safety
for all who enjoy the outdoors".

Mary Schneider is the first recipient of the Allan May
Conservation Scholarship, awarded in honor of the former District
Conservationist. Ms. Schneider will attend the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign in the fall of 2007. Mary plans to "dedicate my life
to preserving and conserving the Earth's precious resources".

Samantha will be attending the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 2007. Samantha's plans include
pursuing a career in Marine Bioligy.

2006 Scholarship Award Winners
The

Michael Mochizuki of Western Springs, Angelica Lagunas of Tinley Park, and
Nicholas Skertch. Each recipient will
receive a $1000 scholarship toward their college tuition.

Michael Mochizuki is a 2006
graduate of Lyons Township High School. He will be attending the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. His goal is to obtain a degree in
the Biological Sciences.

Angelica Lagunas is a 2006
graduate of Lincoln-Way East. She will be attending the
University of Illinois, Urbana, IL. Her goal is to obtain a degree in
Crop Science.

Nicholas Skertch is a 2006
graduate of Lyons Township High School. He will be attending the
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia,
PA. His goal is to obtain a degree in
Bio-Engineering.

2005 Scholarship Award Winners
Emily Kasl of Western Springs, Rebecca Brunner of New Lenox, and Alex
Ericksen of Posen
each recipient received a $1000 scholarship toward their college tuition.

Emily Kasl is a 2005
graduate of Lyons Township High School. She will be attending the
University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. Her goal is to obtain a degree in
Marine Science.

Rebecca Brunner is a 2005
graduate of Lincoln-Way Central High School. She will be attending the
Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Her goal is to obtain a degree in
Zoology or other science related field.

Alex Ericksen is a 2005
graduate of Bremen High School. He will be attending Valparaiso
University, Valparaiso, IN. His goal is to obtain a degree in
Civil or Environmental Engineering.

2004 Scholarship Award Winners
Laurence Lulich Jr. of Plainfield, Danielle Ruffatto of New Lenox, Kathleen
Zaban of Frankfort, and Lynnette Holem of Wilmington each recipient received a $1000 scholarship toward their college tuition.

Laurence Lulich Jr. is a
2004 graduate of Plainfield South High School. He will be attending the
University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana this fall. His goal is to obtain a
Bachelor of Science Degree along with becoming a Certified Landscape
Professional. “I want to use the education I have gained along with the
success of my company to promote conservation and the positive effects that
trees and greenery and open spaces have on a community.”

Danielle Ruffatto is a
2004 graduate of Lincoln-Way Central High School. She will be attending the
University of St. Francis, Joliet this fall. Her goal is to obtain a degree
in Environmental Science and become a high school science teacher. “I hope
to benefit the natural world by either doing research or teaching young
people about nature’s importance to society.”

Kathleen Zaban is a 2004
graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School. She will be attending Northland
College, Ashland, WI. Her goal is to obtain a degree in Environmental or
Biological Science. “Armed with a degree in environmental sciences, a love
of the outdoors, and a strong determination, I foresee my impact on the
environment when I graduate.” |

Lynnette Holem is a 2004
graduate of Wilmington High School. She will be attending the Florida
Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL. Her goal is to obtain a degree in
Marine Biology and Ecology. “I hope to be able to do research about this
environment and come up with some reasonable ways to stop the destruction of
coral reefs before it is too late.”

2003 Scholarship Award Winners
Cathrine Cabay of Joliet, Daniel Nugent
of Manhattan and Kristina Trendl of Garden Homes each received an
$800 scholarship, which will be paid directly to their universities for the
second term.

Catherine Cabay is a 2003 graduate
of Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Illinois. This fall she plans on
attending Grand Valley State University, majoring in Natural Resource
Management. Catherine’s goal is to pursue a career in the field of
Natural Resource Management. “I have been fortunate to have lived in
Illinois and experience this area as well as spend a great deal of time
during the summers of my childhood in Northern Wisconsin. Fishing, hiking,
boating, and water sports have become a permanent part of my life. In our
fast growing world, without conservation these activities that I have grown
to love will be in jeopardy.” |

Daniel Nugent is a 2003 graduate of Providence Catholic
High School in New Lenox, Illinois. This fall he plans on attending the
University of Illinois at Urbana, majoring in Consumer and Environmental
Sciences. Daniel also plans to further his education after attending the
University of Illinois. Daniel’s goal is to pursue a career that will lead
to the advancement of Illinois agriculture and conservation. “If I were
able to become a attorney or public servant, I would utilize my agricultural
background to guarantee that the laws governing agriculture in this state
are both fair and efficient. I would be able to directly aid farmers and
ranchers as an attorney by defending the interest of family farms above the
interests of urban sprawl and development, environmental foes who attempt to
destroy both American agribusiness and business, and other legal issues that
will arise in the future,”

Kristina
Trendl is a 2003 graduate Dwight D. Eisenhower High School in Blue Island,
Illinois. This fall she plans on attending Southern Illinois University at
Carbondale, majoring in Forestry. Kristina’s goal is to pursue a career in
parks and recreation. “I believe that taking care of our natural resources
is the key to having a successful nation in the future. Taking care of
these natural resources entails not only protection, but finding ways to
improve upon them.”
